Darwinism or Creationism, who do you trust?

The battle between Darwinism and Creationism has been for some time now. Creationism is the belief of God. Darwinism is the belief of evolution developed by Charles Darwin to contradict Creationism. Darwinism or evolution theory is based on the survival of the fittest. Meaning the species that’s best suited to its environment will have a higher survival rate. The one’s that not best equipped will die preventing overpopulation of the earth.

As Darwin states about evolution is that all species including humans came from other species. Evolution is determined by natural selection. Natural selection is the process that enables some organisms to live and reproduce while others do not survive. Darwin says: “Natural selection, on the principle of qualities being inherited at corresponding ages, can modify the egg, seed, or young, as easily as the adult.”(Darwin 134) For example, in my scientific revolution class we talked about how certain individuals within a population might possess a genetic trait that provides resistance to a local disease. As a result, those individuals tend to survive longer and produce more offspring than the other members of the population.

Another good example is birds and their beaks. Some are long and slim beaks that are used for the small seeds; others have short, large and powerful beaks used for crushing the bigger seeds. From this evidence Darwin concluded that all of birds had a common ancestor that evolved into the different species we see today. So, this simple structure proves how species evolve over time.

Even though, today science still can say nothing about the supernatural. This debate will continue forever until somebody can prove that Darwinism is true with scientific evidence or even prove that Creationism is true with scientific evidence. But until that time comes, people should be given a choose which they want to accept.

No Guts, No Glory!

Dissection is more than just cutting open a body and looking inside it. It is almost like an adventure in medical research. Andreas Vesalius was the first who revolutionized the idea of opening the body and trying to make sense of how it worked. In Europe during sixteenth and seventeenth century this concept was just being introduced and not an easy one to grasp. Dissection can be a hard subject to conduct to but it’s a subject it can lead to amazing things and discoveries. By using someone's dead body, it can lead to the extension of their life in a long term. Who wouldn't want to have the comfort of knowing that health care will provide more for person’s living, and be able to fix certain things inside the body that were not possible before due to the lack of medical knowledge. Throughout this presentation we will show the wonders of what can be found with dissection and what can be done with the knowledge of medicine. This amazing discoveries lead to medical advancement.

Gender, Science and Modernity

The 16th and 17th century when most of women didn’t have any power and were mistreated dramatically my gender. Their tasks were to stay home, cook, clean and making everything perfect. According to Ruth Watt’s article Gender, Science and Modernity in Seventeenth-century England, women were not well educated and they were excluded from formal educational institutions such as the grammar school and the university. There are few factors that play a role in here. For instance, at that time witchcraft was a big deal and church was just breathing on your back. It’s clearly that if a women were to have some sort of a break through or discovery in science she would be automatically accused of witchcraft. “Women had their scientific impulses restrained by gendered notions.” (Watts) Men had a lot of control and church was able to stimulate that control for years. As the bad times slowly went by, women naturally started to have a place in science through their culinary and medical roles. A woman like Bathsua Makin and Anna Maria van Schurmann were able to provide an education for girls and ability to learn and use a range of sciences and mathematics in an extended female role. It was a big step and giant leap for women and science.

Thinking about today's society I found asking myself this simple question: What is liberation for women today? Well, it’s everything that surrounds women today like love, money and power. Women use liberation to become free and do what ever they want. I found a short video of women who talked about this subject matter, and it’s amazing to hear and see how women became who they are today.

Where does Google taking us? by Andrei

Is it really true that technology like Google making us stupid? Mr. Carr sure thinks so, and Google gives people ability to figure things out with out hardly any effort. When I moved to US, my dad always sent me to a dictionary when I asked him the meaning of a word I didn’t know. It was kind of a pain because an instant answer from Google would be awesome back them. Now, look around and you will see how people find ways to make thinking, deciding and judging as simple as possible. So, it’s not a surprise that Google is loved as it is. By not having what you want at your finger tips makes people actually do work and who wants to do that. The generation of college students now entering the new technology world and every generation following them will never look back at old ways (if they live in a world of "cyberspace”). So people need to question; what will happen to our future and the future of our children’s mind, when they have everything at a “push of a button”.
Now lets look at the positive side of Google. As The Future of Reading article point out, Google made things easier and faster. Even the “P
ulitzer prize-winning journalist David Vise details the remarkable rise of Google from a $US1 million beginning to what is now a $US40 billion giant, accessed by more than 64 million people a day, in more than 100 languages.” That’s incredible if you ask me. So if you think about Google doesn’t make us stupid, in the way it only makes us bored, because it’s becoming more and more repetitive around the world.

Liquid Body Armor

Imagine what it would be like to feel like a "super hero" when bullets just bounce off you. Well, in recent news, US military scientists and engineers are developing and designing a new kind of armor. This new armor is so high tech, it’s liquid, as you can check out at this Howstuffworks.com demo. They call it Liquid Body Armor; it’s strong like a 2 inch metal plate, can cover virtually every part on a human body, and is light weight and extremely flexible.

This armor uses new kinds of materials or what Science Daily calls "smart materials", materials that can sense and respond to change in the environment, either through the application of electricity or magnetism, or to changes in temperature. The US military emphasizes that this new armor is a break through in technology and possibly a new way to protect soldiers and their vulnerable body parts. In the future it could be a way to protect your self and your family.

It’s interesting to see how the military is thinking to switch their focus from weapons to defenses. I think it’s an important change. Bringing more alive soldiers back and having a new way to protect their lives.
